Also known as Lhasa, Lhasa De Sela was an American-Mexican singer, who lived in Québec. She had a deep voice & sang in 3 languages : English, French & Spanish. Her music was between traditional, gypsy & rock. Described as «an instinctive & seeking woman», her album La Llorona (N°25 in 1998) «changed the face of Québec’s immigrant songs».
Her third album, self-titled, came out in Europe, Canada, the United States & Japan in April 2009 (N°13 in 2009). The album was sung in English, her native language, recorded in analogic at Montréal’s Hôtel2Tango studio & produced by Thierry Amar. The album got a nice success in European & North American press. Musicians on the album have been Sarah Pagé on harp, Miles Perkin on double bass, Joe Grass on guitars, Andrew Barr on drums & Freddy Koella on guitars. Patrick Watson composed some songs.
Lhasa presented her last album on April 21, 2009 at Paris’ Bouffes Du Nord. After 2 concerts in May in Iceland, tours in autumn 2009 were cancelled because of her illness. The singer died on January 1 of breast cancer. She was 37.
